Chapter 1
Our Dorothea & Celia Brooke "naturally regarded frippery as the ambition of a huckster's daughter." Dorothea knew many passages of Pascal's Pensees and Jeremy Taylor by heart. Appears more intelligent and beautiful, as well as singular in her thought, than Celia. (of Dorothea) "her mind was theoretic" They live with their Uncle (Mr Brooke) at Tipton, who is unusually fond of his snuff box. Dorothea's relatively strange beliefs hurt her marriage prospects, as well as shifting her perception of an ideal husband. "A man would think twice before he risked himself in such fellowship." Celia's innocence wins over rural opinion over Dorothea's intelligence and atypicality. Yet Dorothea seems to have a striking charm, especially towards men. Furthermore: "Dorothea, with all her eagerness to learn the truths about life, retained very childlike ideas about marriage". Dorothea to Celia: "Souls have complexions too; what will suit one will not suit another." "Is there any yoked creature without its private opinions?"
